London IVF cost spotlight:
- The true median cost of an IVF package in London (excluding medication) is £5,877, compared with the UK median of £4,890.
- This means London IVF cycles cost around £987 more than the national median — a difference driven by higher staffing costs, specialist expertise and laboratory infrastructure in the capital.
- When you add the national median medication cost of £1,500, a typical London cycle totals £7,377.
- Advertised prices can mask essential extras. The UK advertised median is £3,850, but the national true cost rises to £4,890, and London’s true cost rises further to £5,877.
- Pre-treatment tests, medication, add-ons and embryo freezing all sit outside most package prices, so they need to be included in your planning.
- NHS eligibility depends on your borough’s Integrated Care Board (ICB). You can check your circumstances quickly with our NHS IVF Eligibility Calculator.
- If you’re comparing clinics, our Clinic Matcher helps you see the clinics that best match your background and budget — so you’re not making decisions in the dark.
What is average cost of IVF in London?
Clinics typically package the core elements of IVF into an “IVF package,” but what is included varies across London. From our 2026 data, we found that the average true cost of IVF in London is £5,877 excluding medication (£7,377 with the average cost of medication).
This means people in London pay around 20% more than the UK median for a full IVF package once all essential components are included.
There are also additional costs to consider, including pretreatment investigations, blood tests, scans, semen analysis, medication and potential add-ons.
To simplify the process, we show an industry benchmark on each of our clinic pages. With our Clinic Match tool you can generate a personalised short list and compare the full range of potential costs more easily.
What does “true cost” actually mean?
Many people are surprised to learn that:
- Advertised IVF prices don’t include many essential components
- Viral screening, blastocyst culture, freezing and storage are usually itemised separately
- Follow-up consultations and counselling often sit outside the package
- Medication is almost always an additional cost
This is why advertised prices can look deceptively low. Our “true cost” reflects the actual price of a complete, standard cycle including all required components.
We believe this is the clearest way to support your decision-making.
“Patients suddenly become consumers when they start IVF and it can be very difficult for people who aren’t medically trained to know what they’re buying.”
— Kayleigh Hartigan, Founder of Seen Fertility, The Observer (2024)
Why IVF costs more in London
It’s completely understandable to wonder why the capital is more expensive. Here’s the context that matters:
- London hosts a concentration of specialist clinics with advanced laboratories and consultant-led care.
- Operational costs in London are higher — and this flows into package pricing.
- Many London clinics offer highly individualised treatment pathways, which can affect cost structures.
This doesn’t mean treatment in London is “better” or “worse” — just different. What matters is choosing a clinic aligned with your needs, budget and values.
And to make that possible, understanding the full breakdown of costs is essential.
| Cost category | UK median (2026) | London median (2026) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| True IVF package (excl. medication) | £4,890 | £5,877 | +£987 |
| Medication (national median) | £1,500 | £1,500 | — |
| Total per IVF cycle | £6,390 | £7,377 | +£987 |
What is the cost of IVF in London at each stage of treatment?
IVF costs can be broken down into three stages: pretreatment, treatment, and post-treatment.
Here, we’ll look at the cost of IVF in London at each stage if you are self-funding (before getting into alternative ways to pay for IVF further on in the guide). It’s worth noting that once you start one stage of treatment you are not committed to pay for or continue with the next stage at the same clinic, or at all; though if you do switch clinics between stages, you may have to repeat and repay for some preliminary tests. You can find out more about what’s involved in each stage of treatment in our IVF guide.
Pre-treatment costs in London
Everything starts with your initial consultation and pre-treatment tests (including blood tests to check hormone levels, pelvic scans, sperm tests). Most clinics price these together as one package, often called fertility MOTs; though some clinics charge separately for each scan, blood test, consultation… you name it.
Here are some typical packages, tests and costs for the pre-treatment stage at IVF clinics in London:
| Treatment | Average cost | Cost range |
|---|---|---|
| Initial consultation | £200 | £120–£250 |
| Baseline scan | £398 | £225–£524 |
| AMH test | £240 | £110–£370 |
| Thyroid tests | £96 | £40–£249 |
| Semen analysis | £165 | £105–£195 |
Many clinics will offer these essential pretreatment tests in a single package, called a “Fertility MOT.” The costs of these packages depending on your family set up are listed below:
| Treatment | Average cost |
|---|---|
| Male + female MOT (true cost) | £549 |
| Same-sex female MOT | £656 |
| Solo mother MOT | £382.50 |
With our Clinic Match tool, we help you gather the key information clinics need before offering a personalised treatment plan. You can upload any recent results you already have — including AMH, AFC, FSH, semen analysis, PdG or progesterone, and other baseline hormone tests — so you’re not paying to repeat them unnecessarily. We can also help arrange an AMH test, either through our Clinic Match tool or a trusted third-party provider. We’re paid by the testing providers we partner with, but it won’t change the price you pay. It’s simply how we keep our guides and community resources free for everyone to use.
If you still need other tests, you’re in control of how you organise them. Many people use at-home hormone kits, speak with their GP, or book directly with a fertility clinic for things like AFC scans, FSH, PdG, or semen testing. Bringing these results together means you can speak to multiple clinics with confidence, compare their recommendations, and move forward without unnecessary repeat testing or added costs.
Find the right clinic for your budget
Finding a clinic that suits your budget, background and clinical needs is essential. We’ll match you to the clinics that are the right fit on all counts, so you can access your best options and have a clear plan from here on.
IVF treatment costs in London
Most clinics create packages for the treatment phase called “IVF packages.” IVF treatment packages cover the costs for various components and services needed for treatment, including your doctor’s time, nurses, surgical instruments and consulting rooms, though exactly what’s included in a package is different at every clinic.
The average advertised cost of an IVF package in London is £3,910.
Anything not included outside of the main treatment package at a clinic is charged as an additional cost. This could include consultations, tests, screenings, scans, embryo freezing and storage. The core components that should be included in a baseline IVF package are set out below. We have also included the unit costs of key components and services, so you can get a good sense of each element, incase some of these are not included in the packages at clinics you are considering:
| Core components of IVF treatment | Average cost | Cost range |
|---|---|---|
| Nurse consultation | £185 | £100–£220 |
| Female viral screening | £250 | £80–£330 |

| Embryo storage (1 year) | £400 | £275–£499 |
| HFEA fee | £100 | £100 (set national price) |
IVF treatment add-ons in London
Some people choose (or are advised by their clinic) to have certain treatment add-ons during IVF, which incur extra costs. For example, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is used by 49% of people who have IVF, and costs an extra £1,300 on average. Initial tests and previous treatments can determine whether certain add-ons are advised, clinics will recommend these after the pre-treatment stage. It’s important to do your research before deciding on these add-ons, as the HFEA notes: [1]
“For some treatment add-ons there is not enough evidence to show that they are effective at improving treatment outcomes.” [2]
We have listed the average costs for the most common add-ons in an IVF cycle below for London. These all match the UK-wide average:
| Add-on | Average cost |
|---|---|
| ICSI | £1,375 |
| Blastocyst culture | £550 |
| EmbryoGlue | £258 |
| Endometrial scratch | £305 |
IVF medication costs in London
The cost of medication varies significantly for each person, which is why most clinics do not include this in their IVF package prices. To simplify your estimated costs on our clinic pages, we’ve used the same estimated medication price for every clinic, £1,500 which is a good benchmark. It’s also worth noting that when you have a fully costed treatment plan and medication list from the doctor at your chosen clinic, you can shop around (clinics will charge you a prescription fee if you go down this route). You can buy fertility medication from high street pharmacies, for example, or even at cost price from Asda!
We’ve listed the average cost and cost ranges for medication and prescriptions at clinics in London below:
| Service | Average cost | Cost range |
|---|---|---|
| Medication | £1,500 | £1,000–£2,500 |
| Prescription | £53 | £15–£140 |
Post-treatment costs in London
Your post-treatment costs will depend on what happens after your cycle, but two of the most common expenses are embryo freezing and long-term storage. Using the latest 2026 data , the median cost of embryo freezing is £550, and one year of storage is £400. Some clinics include a year of storage within their package, but many do not. If you plan to keep embryos stored for several years — which is very common — it’s helpful to factor in the ongoing annual fee from the start.
Many people also go on to have a Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET), particularly if they are aiming for more than one pregnancy or did not conceive in their fresh cycle. An FET cycle is an additional cost on top of your IVF package, and it’s an important part of planning your long-term treatment pathway, especially as most people will have more than one cycle before having a live birth.
Total cost of IVF in London
As you can see, there’s a lot to take into account when adding up your total cost and a lot of potential variation. Below is an estimate of the true average cost of one round of IVF for a heterosexual couple, for you to use a starting point:
| Treatment | Average cost |
|---|---|
| Average true cost of a male + female fertility MOT | £549 |
| Average true cost of IVF treatment package (average true cost for one cycle) | £5,877 |

| Total including add-ons | £9,864 |

Financing IVF in London
There are many different ways to pay for IVF in London, and understanding these routes can make the financial side of treatment feel clearer and more manageable. Although the majority of people in the UK (around 73%) fund IVF themselves, some do receive support through the NHS. Others pay for treatment with the help of private health insurance or employee benefit schemes, depending on what their policy or employer provides.
Some clinics also offer financing plans, and the growing demand for IVF means there are now IVF-specific lenders that provide personalised finance and insurance options, with the usual eligibility checks you’d expect from any loan. For a small number of people, donating eggs — either through clinical research trials or egg-sharing schemes — can reduce or remove the cost of treatment. In these cases, an IVF cycle may be offered for free in exchange for donating a number of eggs, though eligibility criteria apply and the decision is highly individual.
NHS-funded IVF treatment in London
If you live in England, funding for health services in your area is overseen by an NHS integrated care board (ICB). ICBs determine who is eligible for NHS funded fertility treatment. London is covered by 5 ICBs (North Central London; North East London; North West London; South East London; and South West London), so the area of London you live in will determine which ICB is responsible for eligibility decisions on your NHS funded treatment.
If you’re feeling confused, we understand. It is confusing.
Please use our NHS IVF Eligibility Calculator to find out if you’re eligible for treatment. If you have any questions feel free to contact us via WhatsApp or email.
Private health insurance-funded IVF
The main UK health insurance companies including BUPA, Aviva and AXA PPP recognise fertility clinics and cover all or some IVF treatment costs in their policies (you will need to check your own policy for specifics as these do vary). In some cases, employers also supplement their health insurance schemes with additional benefits, which can include fertility support via providers like Fertifa and Apryl, for example. These range in comprehensiveness: some cover the costs (at least partially) of treatment, while others only offer fertility testing and support.
Again, it’s worth bearing in mind that the likelihood is that you will still have to pay out of pocket for some of your IVF costs, in addition to what is covered by your private health insurance.
